Surry Hills public pool

The Surry Hills Public Pool is a technical exploration of the connection between structural engineering and architecture. Situated adjacent to historical social and political landmarks. The site creates an inner city oasis bounded by thick walls with openings that provide suggestions as to the activities within.
The centre is intended to be open to the public as a community space, with no admission stand. Instead an administration area is set up to allow areas for swim school students to congregate and staff members to work. The water spaces have been designed for leisure and water play, with streams, barriers and tunnels for occupants and children to explore.
In an attempt to make the building as environmentally conscious as possible, the water collected upon the Aramax roof is directed to an organic filtration system that feeds rain water in to the pool areas, as well as showers and toilets. The structure surrounding the main pool area is purely for water collection and wet weather protection for those using the space.
The form and materiality of this mass is reminiscent of the warehouses and utilitarian spaces of the area during Sydney’s industrial boom, with modern appropriations to openings and shading elements.
